When an orphan, Surya (Rajinikanth) is abandoned by his mother played by Srividya, and left to grow up in a slum, he eventually grows up to be a kind-hearted young man, with a reputation for helping those in trouble and distressed. One day, Surya comes across a woman being molested by another man, and to protect her, he fends off the abuser. However his actions mortallly wound the attacker who is working for the local crime boss, Devraj (Mammootty). When arrested for the man's murder, Surya is rescued by Devraj, who tells him that he owes him for his freedom and the loss of his previous enforcer. Surya agrees to become Devraj's enforcer, and quickly rises to the position of thalapathi (commander),the two men also becoming very close friends. A scrupulously honest collecter Arjun (Arvind Swamy) arrives in the district, determined to bring down their gang. This feature film has Rajnikanth and Mammooty in the lead roles, and the theme of the film is that of friendship triumphing over familial ties. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography of the film is handled by Santosh Sivan. The movie is loosely based on the Duryodhana-Karna-Arjuna relationship in the Indian epic The Mahabharata.
Ilaiyaraaja's composition "Rakkama Kaiya Thattu" from the score was amongst the songs listed in a BBC World Top Ten music poll.
